The Royal Danish Lifeguard was formed in 1658 by King Fredrik 3. At that time the King found it necessary to form a regiment which was separated from the army. At that time it was the only regiment which recruited only Danes and the King thereby got a regiment only loyal to him. Since then The Royal Danish Guard has protected the royal family.

In Denmark drones are not for killing. The danish company Cowi uses drones to protect nature. By doing a drone mission it is possible to monitor large areas in short time. When repeating the monitoring it is very easy follow the environmental development in an area and make sure that different plants grow as intended.

Denmark is on its way to becoming a “space nation”. The private and volunteer organisation Copenhagen Suborbitals works hard on completing a manned flight into space and back again. 44 people are engaged in the project which was started by Peter Madsen and Kristian von Bengtson. It is non-profit, non-governmental and open source.

A different day at the office

Not everyone has a 9 to 5 job. Lars Teil Hansen works at Storebæltsbroen (Great Belt Bridge), where he is maintenance manager. But he also has another job, where he shows journalists both the top and the bottom of the impressive suspension bridge that has the third longest main span in the world. This morning we had a tour and saw the great view from 254 metres above sea level.

The bridge links the eastern and western parts of Denmark, and is 18 km long. It opened in 1998. Read more on: www.storebaelt.dk/english/bridge

Free bike repairs

At the University of Copenhagen a new initiative has been set in motion. It's a bicycle repair shop, and the service is free for all students and employees. Peter Lange brought the idea back from a university in Canada, and decided to open a bicycle repair shop at his university.

Normally you have to pay to get your bike fixed, but now you can bring your bike and volunteers are ready to help you to fix it. They have enough spare parts to fix a flat tyre but you have to bring your own spare parts if it's a bigger operation.

Upcycling (unlike recycling) is the practice of taking something that is disposable and transforming it into something of greater use and value, leading to a higher material and energy benefits.

BASTARD Møbler (BASTARD Furniture) does that when they take in old cable spools and make coffee tables out of them. They upcycle a product that otherwise would have been destroyed by the industry or maybe recycled.

In contrast to recycling, upcycling maintains the whole of the material because it is simply re-purposed, and not broken down into a lesser form.

Christmas donuts (Danish: Æbleskiver) can be made in under one minut. Just take a look at this video.

To this dough there is used 1/2 litre milk, 30g yeast, 6 eggs, 2 tbs suger, 400g flour, 1/2 tbs cardamom and 130g melted butter. And then you have to have the special 'æbleskive' pan.

Klejner are Danish fried biscuits/cookies. It is commen in Denmark and Sweden to make these 'klejner' when it is close to Christmas.

It is a dough made from flour, egg yolks, sugar and butter. The dough is rolled out and then cut into strips, folded and fried.

Winegrowing in Denmark

The small vineyard Garbolund lies 50 kilometres north of Copenhagen outside the village of Annisse. The owner of the vineyard, Jette Haugaard, invited us to the harvest which was in mid-Oktober. Her friends and family helped her picking the many grapes.

The weather has been especially bad this year for the Danish winemakers, but Jette still hopes to get around a 1000 bottles out of her hard work.

Superkilen celebrates diversity in Copenhagen

In the Nørrebro area just north of Copenhagen's city centre a new park is situated and it is called Superkilen. The park comprises three areas, The Red Square, The Black Market and The Green Park.

The park aims to support the diversity of local inhabitants by using globally-found objects which symbolise the home countries of those who live in the area.

The hope is that Superkilen can revitalize the area by giving it a global identity and unifying the inhabitants.

Once a year - on Friday in week 41 - Danish schools a day dedicated to exercise, with pupils from the entire country taking part in some kind of exercise. Most schools have an exercise run. The younger classes from Christianshavs School had a great time running a 1,5 kilometre stretch.

Byhaven 2200, a community garden, is located right in the middle of the Nørrebro district of Copenhagen. Here some very enthusiastic young people have started the garden in Nørrebroparken. One of the initiators is Sandra Villumsen. She tells the story of how the community garden would not work if it was not for the help of the many volunteers.The garden started spring this year, and has been given a three year permit by the municipality of Copenhagen. But hopefully the garden can stay for many years.

Food Co-Op takes over Copenhagen

In just three years Københavns Fødevarefællesskab (KBHFF), a food co-op, has grown to more than 3500 members in 10 different shops. A great succes, that started out small but now almost have taken over most of the city.

Andreas Lloyd, spokesperson for KBHFF, tells about how the food co-op works. How five tons of vegetables gets distributed to the many volunteer members, that have to work three hours a month in order to make the food co-op run properly.

‘Kong Christian stod ved højen mast’ (King Christian stood by the lofty mast) is mainly used for royal and military occasions. Though every New Year´s Eve, is it tradition to sing immediately after midnight. The theme of the song is about the heroics of Danish sailors during the wars against Sweden in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is regarded as one the oldest national anthems in the world.

Millions of bees are taking over the city of Copenhagen. We met the guy who is in charge of the company 'Bybi' (Citybee) on a rooftop. With him he had his employees and of course - a lot of bees.

Scandinavia's Largest Design Hotel in Copenhagen

Bella Sky Comwell is with its 814 rooms the largest hotel in the Scandinavian countries. Designed by the Danish architects company 3xNielsen, it's a unique building spreading over 23 floors. Its two towers with a 15 degree angle allow a clear view of the surroundings from as many rooms as possible.
